Signing?

Tue Jul 15, 2008, 2:00 AM
Do you all sign your artwork?

I have up until now for the time-consuming pieces,
but as I look around it seems like most people don't.

Any thoughts on this? I do find a signature kind of distracting, and I think for that reason I'm going to stop.
But I'd like to hear what you guys have to say~

I don't care for those fancy little scribble-signatures in the corner of pieces. If I do feel like signing something I do it right in the middle.

Signatures are a pretty old concept, some ancient Greek coins had signatures of the people that crafted them. I don't know if the same can be said about the Greek/Roman sculptures/frescos because I don't think they considered those "art". It would've been like signing a house after you've put a coat of paint on it.
hmmm i don't usually sign my work because i forget or i just don't feel it's needed i mean as long i know it's mine lol. if i feel like signing it then i do XD

I've never done anything really to the level of a "completed artwork" so signing hasn't even crossed my mind. I think it would be cool, though, to find a way to incorporate either a signature or other identifying trademark/logo-ish thing into the picture so that it's kinda hidden... like in the sole of a shoe.
Wow, it's a really old concept. Hmm...

I never bothered to think of why I do it.
Signing my work is something my parents told me to do since I was little, so I never bothered to question it until now.

Thanks for putting it in that perspective!
That makes a lot of sense. :)

I dunno, I thought of it sort of as watermarking your art, but then it's like... what's the point, really. Unless it's a print that can be reproduced, there's no extra protection in signing the tiny web versions of images, right?
Wow, you didn't sign your comics? Didn't realize that.

I agree, it's fun trying to find places to hide a signature.. but sometimes when you can't, it gets down to "where would the least distracting place on this piece be?" And that's where I've been for the past few deviations, so I kinda feel like they're bringing down the overall look of the picture.

Thanks for the imput~!
I always sign on the back of traditional work but for digital I haven't really done that though I do tend to hide my initials in the drawing. You know so I can easily say it's mine.

Most of my stuff is signed, with the exception of my schoolwork. Usually I'll date the back of my schoolwork so I at least know when I did it. But for my digital stuff I do my initials and then make it a bit transparent and small. That way my signature is there, but not overbearing.

I'm a Gaia Online-holic.
I have a funny little logo that I use to "sign" things. I leave them on all of my finished pieces mostly out of habit, these days.

I also date them so I can look back and see how much I sucked back then.
